The general technical studies major is intended to assist citizens of West Virginia and other states who have earned credits, often from a variety of sources, to apply those credits toward an associate degree. Thus, the major is only open to incoming freshman who have 18 hours of prior learning credit in an applied discipline such as automotive, fire science, welding, or machining.
The degree is nontraditional in that it provides opportunities for verifying competencies as a means for recognizing and awarding credits for learning through life experiences, e.g. credits awarded through College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and DEFENSE Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) testing; credits for training in the Military, business, industry, etc. as recognized by the American Council on Education (ACE); credits for Prior Learning Assessment (PLA); credits earned through nationally recognized certifications and licenses; or credits earned by challenging courses offered by Potomac State College of WVU.
Graduation Requirements
The AAS in Technical Studies: General will consist of three curricular components: general education, area of concentration and electives for a total of 60 credit hours.
